Welcome to the Williams School Read-a-Thon! Read great books, have fun and raise money for the Williams School PTO. The more you read, the more you earn! Here’s how it works:

1. Talk to your family and friends about sponsoring you for the Read-a-Thon. They can pledge a flat amount or make a per book or per page pledge.

2. On October 1st start keeping track of your reading on the attached sheet. Keep track for three weeks. Consider setting up a challenge for yourself like reading one short book every day or one long book every week. Or get your parents to read to you (for our younger students).

3. The read-a-thon will end on Sunday, October 21st.

4. Collect your pledges right away (either cash or checks made out to Williams School PTO) and turn them in with your reading log by October 25th.

5. Winners will be announced and prizes awarded at the Book Fair on October 26-27th.

School Council Election – Need Nominations
If you are interested in school policy or budgets, you might enjoy serving on the Williams School Council. It is a great way to get to know the inter-workings of the school as well as have an impact planning.
Each public school in Massachusetts has a school council. The councils were created by the Education Reform Act of 1993 to provide an opportunity for parents, teachers, and community partners to share ideas and influence decisions that shape and strengthen teaching and learning in their local schools.

The law outlines four major areas of responsibility for councils. School councils are to assist principals in:

• Adopting educational goals for the school that are consistent with local educational policies and statewide student performance standards
• Identifying the educational needs of students attending the school
• Reviewing the annual school building budget
• Formulating a school improvement plan

The term for this committee is three years and the committee meets monthly during the academic school year. If you interested in nominating yourself, or someone else, please email presidents@williamspto.org or call the school’s office at 617-559-6499. Please send nominations in by Friday, November 2nd.

The PTO will present details on their 2007-08 budget. Come hear about the financial picture that supports the community activities and classroom enrichment.

7 p.m. Auditorium

Excellent overview for new parents. All are welcome.

We are hoping to provide space and some supervision for younger children if needed. Please let us know if you need to bring your kids to attend the meeting. presidents@williamspto.org
