The second unit of Understanding our Differences, Learning Disabilities, was presented in the 4rth grade on November 17 and 20. Students learned that learning disabilities are invisible, unlike other disabilities such as blindness or physical disabilities. We discussed that we all have our strengths, and all have things that are challenges for us. We discovered that strengths for some of us can be challenges for others. We learned that our brains are much like computers, in the ways we take in, process, store, and share information, and that sometimes our brains don’t work well in one of these areas, which results in an individual learning disability. The kids rotated through four different stations that helped them experience what it might feel like to have a challenge in one of these areas. Ask your 4rth grader what was easy or hard for him or her! We had a guest speaker who discussed what her life has been like with a learning disability and what strategies she uses to accomplish everyday tasks. The kids asked lots of great questions, and were thoughtful and insightful throughout. We’d like to thank the parent volunteers who helped with this unit: Suzanne Zellner, David Foster, Melinda Broderick, Hugh Gelch, Sue Miller, and Kathleen Maguire. If you are interested in helping with future units of Understanding our Differences in 3rd or 4th grade, please contact one of us.
